Why did you decide to write children’s books?
Comment êtes-vous arrivé
e à l’écriture pour enfants ?

It was becoming a mom that introduced me to children’s literature. I’m sure that my parents read books to me as a child, but I have no memory of them other than the wonderful picture book Oh, What a Busy Day! by Gyo Fujikawa. Isn’t that incredible?!

As a director, I have always married the script with the scenography. For my short films, I often used storyboards. So when I started to read picture books to my own kids, I quickly discovered an art form that fascinated me.

Is the relationship with illustrations fundamental in your work?

Yes, in any case, for the picture books. For the longer stories, I try to create images through the writing itself. But for picture books, it’s how to match the text and the image. Therefore in my manuscripts, I always create a page layout that contains both text and drawings (drawings which, by the way, look more like scribbles than anything else!). Then the illustrator, chosen by the publisher, can build on them. They can follow my initial idea or create a new one.

Oui.

What are your sources of inspiration?
Quelles sont vos sources d’inspiration ?

Life itself. Very small things that might go unnoticed that I like to pick up on as they’re happening.
